I picked up "Myst: The Book of Atrus" off the shelf in Barnes and Noble just because of its curious-looking cover. That was in seventh grade. Now eight years later, there isn't a facet of my life that hasn't been inspired by this book. What I love about this book are the characters - characters that either reflect who I am or who I want to be. So, I've drawn out several key scenes and added quotes from the book that represent the traits of the characters that I find most attractive: curiosity, creativity, intelligence, strength, humility and a bit of mysteriousness.
To Atrus, the main character, the world is out there to be solved and understood. His attention to nature and science was so impressive to me that I wanted to see if I could be the same way, and now I'm a junior majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The physiological diagram at the top is that of a lark, which I've adopted as sortof my signature animal (my last name is Larkin). There's another little lark at the bottom right looking into the Myst book.
At the top, under the bird is Atrus writing in D'ni, the language of the people about which the book is about. Once I got into learning this language, with it's different alphabet and strange grammer, I realized how much fun language study is, and now I'm taking fourth year Japanese (the text under the D'ni).
My university's logo sits inside the gates to the city of D'ni, in the drawing all the way to the right of the orange fissure. Going to my school for the first time was just as exciting as Atrus' first venture into the city.
As a last personal reference, I added small portraits of two other role models of mine, Darwin and Leonardo DaVinci, whose interest in nature, science and art remind me of the Myst characters.
The drawings were done in pencil and merged in Photoshop.
One never knows what they will find when strolling through a particular section. An striking collage of images and another Myst/Riven/Uru fan!. Interesting how the book is falling down on the left hand side and then when it comes to the fissure (that Atrus fell through....) it disappears. Only it reappears on the right hand side at the bottom half of the image. It has fallen to rest at the bottom of the image with it's pages open. A lark sits there and reads it - which is a personalized touch because you mentioned that Larkin is your last name. I think how you portrayed the fissure is good because there is a double meaning. Those who are familiar with Myst Worlds know it is the fissure/rift in time & space that Atrus falls into but you made it a little more unique in several ways. The image is devided: Two dark halves split and separated by a golden light fissure (a subtle nod at Atrus's two sons who turned to darkness?) Also, the images within the fissure show a violent scene and the text reads "my father is mad". The fissure comes to symbolize the rift between father and child (....a nod at the rift between Gehn and Atrus, the rift between Atrus and his two sons: Sirius and Akanar).
Good luck with the contest

Wow, I'm really glad that you commented. Yeah, the fissure design is a nod to that wonderful and mysterious star fissure, as well as a way to divide the intro, climatic, and conculsion scenes (sort of). And also o divide a younger and older Atrus. I never thought of it as being a divisor between opposing forces - I like that idea! "Son against father, truth against evil" sort of idea. Cool!
It's amazing. It's got some of my favorite parts in it too, like when Flame dies, or when Atrus is sitting there lolking at His Father who is lying drunk on the floor, and of course the whole climactic end-sequence on Riven. Whobahnobongu. What else can I say?
oh snappppp! snap. I've done Myst fanart before, but this owns heavily all of my fanart. I love the gold fissure that cuts through the middle, but my favorite part is the falling books on the edges. That's perfect.
